WHY PARENTS SHOULD ENCOURAGE KIDS TO PLAY AND WHY PLAY IS CRITICAL

First of all, play allows kids to use their creativity while developing their imagination, physical, cognitive and emotional strength. Through these physical activities, children are given the opportunities to try new things, conquer their fears and build their confidence. It's been proven that when a child is physically active and successful in their movements, they show higher levels of self-esteem and a great sense of accomplishment.

What’s more, play is not only a mean of learning new things, but also a primary way for individuals to manage stress. Nowadays, with the increases of homework, the burdens on kids are heavier. Kids need time to relieve themselves of others’ competition and parents’ expectations.

Admittedly, play is a great way for parents to build up harmonious relationships with their kids. During playtime, parents have the chance to observe a child’s behaviors and participate in kids’ world. Parents can think questions from kids’ views and gain insight about kids’ perceptions.

Last but not least, play can teach kids how to cooperate with others and cultivate kids’ teamwork. Children get to interact with each other in a non-competitive environment. It doesn't matter if they win or lose – it's about working together and trying their best. Kids learn to understand others’ differences when they are in a team. Kids fight for the same goal and are mad with joy for team’s success and know how to overcome the difficulties they meet, which lay a solid foundation on their further development.

In a word, parents should encourage kids to play rather than keeping on studying all the time. As an old saying goes, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
