What Inspired Katie Zhang to Build Bettaplay?

Katie Zhang’s journey into the playground business began long before she ever considered founding Bettaplay. At just 6 years old, her father, Mr. Zhang, launched his playground business in 1990. Growing up as the daughter of a playground builder, Katie’s childhood was unique—her home was filled with playground equipment, from large outdoor structures to small toys. Her father would often bring home new products for Katie and her brothers to test and enjoy.

Katie Continues the Legacy of Quality and Service in Yiwu

One summer, Katie joined her father on a visit to a kindergarten. She was amazed to see the level of work involved, from installing large playground structures to personally setting up even the smallest chairs. Mr. Zhang always stressed that quality and service were key to customer satisfaction, a lesson that stayed with Katie throughout her career.
 
Katie’s family was inspired by her father’s dedication, and many relatives joined the playground business over the years. In 2009, after graduating, Katie began her own journey in the playground industry in Yiwu, China, continuing the legacy of quality and service her father had established.

Why is the Company Named Bettaplay?

Katie’s perspective on the playground business took a significant turn when she became a mother. In 2011 and 2014, she gave birth to a daughter and a son. As a mother, Katie spent more time at playgrounds—not just as a business owner, but as a user. She was amazed by how children, including her own, could stay engaged for hours, especially in trampoline parks. This sparked the idea: If children could enjoy these spaces so much, why not create places where they could learn and develop essential skills through play? She was also very worried that many playground was not so safe then in China , sometimes it is dangerous if kids play by them own in an indoor playground.
 
In 2016, something profound happened—Google’s AlphaGo defeated the legendary Go player Lee Se-dol. This victory was a wake-up call for Katie. She realized that as artificial intelligence continues to outperform humans in analytical tasks, children must be equipped with skills that machines can never replicate—skills like creativity, critical thinking, curiosity, and emotional resilience. That moment became the inspiration for Bettaplay’s mission: “Help Kids Beat AlphaGo.” Bettaplay’s purpose is to create spaces where children can develop these essential life skills through the power of play.
 

Why Did We Found Bettaplay?

Bettaplay was founded in 2017 with a clear vision: to create safe and fun play spaces for children around the world. Whether it’s a trampoline park, family entertainment center, or adventure park, our goal is to provide complete, hassle-free solutions that meet the needs of both kids and commercial investors. At Bettaplay, we don’t just supply playground equipment—we’re here to offer full-service support to ensure every project is a success.

Why Did We Create the Pokiddo Franchise?

Between 2014 and 2017, Katie’s husband -Mr. Bao and Katie spent a lot of time taking their kids, Bonnie and Andy, to trampoline parks. Watching their children jump and play for hours, they realized just how much kids loved these spaces. But they also saw something else—running a successful park required more than just great equipment. You needed a solid business plan, smart market research, and strong operational strategies to make it work.
That’s what led to the creation of Pokiddo brand for commercial indoor playground in 2017. To test their ideas, they started to build the first Pokiddo Kids Play Park (EQzone) in Wenzhou Rainbow Bay. It wasn’t smooth sailing—dealing with fire regulations, decoration design, and other hurdles was tougher than expected. But after months of hard work, they celebrated the grand opening on January 28, 2018.
The park quickly became a favorite for families near Wenzhou city, offering birthday parties, art,English and reading classes, and even trampoline lessons. Through customer feedback, Mr. Bao and Katie learned that running a playground is no small task—but when done right, it’s incredibly rewarding. Parents loved the space, and kids left feeling energized and happy. These experiences highlighted how much a well-run playground can mean to a community.
